Jacques Lapointe has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, with more than 20 of those years in senior executive positions in Canada and internationally. Mr. Lapointe served as Interim CEO and President of ConjuChem from July 2003 to October 2005 and has been serving as Chairman of the Board since November 2002. Mr. Lapointe has also served as President, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Biochem Pharma Inc. before its acquisition by Shire Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Before his appointments at Biochem Pharma, Mr. Lapointe worked for 12 years with Glaxo Wellcome plc with responsibilities as President and CEO of Glaxo Canada, Managing Director for the United Kingdoms, Regional Director for a number of other countries, and Worldwide Director of Business and Commercial Development. Mr. Lapointe retired from full-time employment, but with his extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry he continues to serve on the boards of various Montreal-based private and public companies, including Biotechnologies ConjuChem Inc.
Mark D. Perrin was appointed President and CEO of ConjuChem in October 2005. Mr. Perrin has held numerous management roles in the pharmaceutical industry. He began his career with Lederle Laboratories, Division of American Cyanamid, in 1979 where he held increasingly responsible positions, including Division Manager, Lederle Canada, Vice President and General Manager of Lederle US Consumer Health Products and Vice President and General Manager of Lederle US Pharmaceuticals. In 1992, he joined Burroughs Wellcome as Vice President of Marketing and Sales for the US. In 1995, Mr. Perrin joined COR Therapeutics, Inc. in South San Francisco, California as Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations. During Mr. Perrin's 6-year tenure at COR Therapeutics, he played the lead role in establishing the company's commercial infrastructure, which included all sales, marketing, and manufacturing functions. From 2002 to 2005, Mr. Perrin functioned as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Orphan Medical, Inc. in Minnetonka, Minnesota. At Orphan Medical, he served as a member of the management team and led the company's commercial activities and its business development functions. Mr. Perrin earned his Bachelor of Science degree in economics at Fordham University, New York, New York, and his Master's in Business Administration at the Kellogg Graduate School of Business, Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois.
Felix J. Baker, PhD, is the Managing Member of Baker Bros. Advisors, LLC, which he and his brother, Julian Baker, founded in 2000. Dr. Baker's firm manages Baker Brothers Investments, a family of long-term investment funds for major university endowments and foundations, which are focused on publicly traded life sciences companies. Dr. Baker's career as a fund manager began when he co-founded a biotechnology investing partnership with the Tisch Family in 1994, which led to the establishment of Baker/Tisch Advisors, LLC. Dr. Baker serves as Director of Biotechnologies ConjuChem Inc. as well as Trimeris, Inc., Neurogen Corporation, Seattle Genetics, Inc., and AnorMED, Inc., where he is currently a member of the compensation committee and research and development committee. Dr. Baker earned his bachelor's degree in biology and his doctorate in immunology at Stanford University, Stanford, California.
Randal Chase, PhD, is a retired president of Shire Biologics who brings a wealth of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience to the Board of Directors at Biotechnologies ConjuChem Inc. Before his appointment as President of Shire Biologics, Dr. Chase served as Senior Vice President, Vaccines Operations, at Biochem Pharma. During his time there, Dr. Chase negotiated a $350M pandemic flu contract with the US Government and a meningitis C vaccine distribution agreement with Baxter Healthcare Corporation. He also established an alliance with Berna Biotech for the sales of hepatitis B vaccine in Europe and Fluviral vaccine in Asia. Dr. Chase has held President and CEO positions at several pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including of North American Vaccines, Inc., Pasteur Merieux Connaught (now Sanofi-Aventis), and Quadra Logic Technologies. Dr. Chase continues to apply his scientific background and extensive commercial experience as a member of the Board of Directors at Medicago, Inc., Acambis, and Molecular Templates. Dr. Chase earned his doctorate in biochemistry at the University of British Columbia.
Steve Perrone is the chief financial officer (CFO) at 20-20 Technologies in Montreal, Quebec. He is a chartered accountant and a member of the L'Ordre des Comptables Agréés du Québec. Mr. Perrone has accumulated over 25 years of experience in accounting, including 13 years as Vice President of Finance and CFO of several companies, including Qbiogene, Inc., Comterm, Inc., the LGS Group, and the DMR Group. Mr. Perrone earned his Bachelor of Commerce and Graduate Diploma in accountancy at Concordia University in Montreal.
Craig Saxton, MD, is a retired executive vice president of Pfizer, Inc. He brings over 3 decades of pharmaceutical industry experience to Biotechnologies ConjuChem Inc. as a director. Dr. Saxton began his career at Pfizer, Inc. in 1976 as Medical Advisor in the Central Research Division at the European Research and Development headquarters in Sandwich, UK. He relocated to New York in 1981 as the senior associate medical director of international pharmaceuticals. In 1982 he was named vice president, Medical Director of the International Division, and in 1988, Dr. Saxton moved to the Central Research Division in Groton, Connecticut, where he was appointed senior vice president of clinical research and development. In 1993, Dr. Saxton was appointed executive vice president of global research and development, holding worldwide responsibility for the development of all new drugs discovered or licensed by Pfizer for human therapeutic utilization. In 2001, Dr. Saxton retired from his distinguished 25-year career at Pfizer. Dr. Saxton now brings his invaluable insights as a board member to numerous companies, including Tularik, Inc., Neurogen Corporation, Veritas Medicine, and the African Medical and Research Foundation. Dr. Saxton earned his Bachelor of Science in anatomy and his medical degree at Leeds University in Leeds, UK.
William Heiden has been President and CEO of Elixir Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Cambridge, MA) since 2004. He was previously President and COO of Praecis (acquired by GSK), which he had joined in May 2002. Prior to Praecis, Mr. Heiden held positions of increasing responsibility within Schering-Plough Corporation, including General Manager of Schering's business in the BeNeLux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg), Vice-President, Sales & Marketing of Schering's U.S. cardiovascular business unit, and Vice-President of Schering's Oncology/Biotech business unit. Mr. Heiden holds Masters degrees from Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management and the University of Louvain, and a Bachelors degree from the University of Florida. He is a member of the Duke University Healthcare Advisory Council and member of the Board of Directors of LFB, S.A. a French biotechnology company.
